ClaytonWorks = Alec and Gabi Clayton

The Claytons

met in New York in 1974 where they worked for a service organization called Everything for Everybody that among other things published an alternative newspaper that Alec edited and Gabi worked on. They co-founded a publishing company in Hattiesburg, Mississippi in the late 1970s and published, in succession, a weekly newspaper, a monthly magazine and a quarterly art and literary journal. They moved to Olympia, Washington in 1988 and began offering their services in web design and graphic arts in 1995. They started their publishing imprint Mud Flat Press (originally named ClaytonWorks Publishing) after publishing Alec's first novel in 2000.

  Alec is a freelance writer, artist and novelist. He writes a theater column for The News Tribune (Tacoma, Washington), a weekly art review column for the Volcano (Tacoma), and regular arts features and other articles for His paintings have been shown in galleries in the Pacific Northwest and beyond. He has a Masters degree in drawing and painting from East Tennessee State University.

  Gabi's undergraduate studies were in drawing and painting, film, video and animation. She completed her Bachelor's degree at The Evergreen State College and her Masters degree in counseling at St. Martin's College (now University). She is a web designer, graphic designer, editor, and a licensed mental health counselor in private practice.
